“ Looks like it hasn't been remodeled in at least 25 years. It's like the dive bar of restaurants. Reminds me of my childhood. Going to places my father loved. It was a Coney Island challenge! When in Detroit... Lafayette was our clear winner. Quaint. Basic. Immediate customer service. Love that they keep it old school and yell to each other. Feels appropriate for this environment. We were in and out. They keep it moving here and just felt more comfortable here. The dog... cooked perfectly. Soft bun. The toppings were lite as I asked for and overall was a better tasting than their neighbor. WINNER! ”
“ Ok ok ok, I've been here well a while and have never ventured to THIS FAMOUS coney spot. Went in the evening and actually not a lot of trouble to find parking or a spot inside. Service is PROMPT, and friendly. I had some coneys and regular fries as the cheese does bad things to me. They do not have an alternate and it's ok- you can always take the lactaid as the chili cheese fries do look good and out of two orders not a fry left. Our order took approximately 2 minutes to deliver! These guys are ready!! Even on a Thursday night that's frosty and post snow. Go and see what the hype is about! You can even grab a beer. ”
“ Took my kids for their first time. We went just after their lunch rush and had 5 coney dogs and some chili fries. Took about 2 minutes to get our food. They do the basics so well. Perfect snap to the dogs, chili is delicious, and just the right amount of mustard and crunchy fresh onions. This place gets a little crazy on game days and at night... I normally avoid. Last time I went after a lions win, it was super crowded and there were a few drunks fighting. For such a small place they have plenty of seating spread out all over the place. Definitely the better than their neighbor. ”
“ A Christmas tradition. My favorite place to eat. I have been coming here for 51 years. Plus this year I wanted to celebrate my cancer recovery. No place on earth I'd rather be. My father brought me as a child and have been hooked since. I ordered 2 with light onions a loose beef and chili fries. All fantastic as always. We sat at the counter. Service was great. Only thing I can't have carbonated drinks. So water is my new drink. I can't wait for my next visit. ”
“ The place if you don't know it is small and always full. The service is fast. The coney dogs are the best. They have that nice snap to them. The chili cheese fries are always fresh and have that gooey goodness. ”
“ Lafayette Coney Island is more than just a restaurant it's a cornerstone of Detroit's culinary history. I ordered the classic coney dog, and it was nothing short of perfection. The combination of the savory chili, crisp onions, and snappy hot dog wrapped in a soft steamed bun is the best in Detroit, bar none. The price is unbeatable, especially for the level of quality. In a world where many places cut corners, Lafayette stays true to its roots, serving up timeless excellence without ever compromising on taste or tradition. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a Detroit staple: no frills, just pure, authentic coney goodness. If you want to experience a piece of Detroit history, look no further. This is a must-visit for locals and tourists alike. A timeless classic that will never go out of style. ”
“ Being from out of town, I got hyped up on the Lafayette vs American Coney Dog thing. With them being literally next door to each other, we went to both locations back to back and tried the Coney Dog and fries at both. The interior of Lafayette has more of a cozy mom and pop old diner feel. The walls are filled with pictures of local celebrities and athletes. Food-wise, I would say I could not tell a difference. It's not a bad thing. The Coney Dogs by design are pretty simple with a hot dog, mustard, chili and onions. The hot dog itself tasted like a standard hot dog and the flavor of the chili was more on the light side. It wasn't heavy on spice or saltiness. When you're craving a hot dog it hits the spot. ”
